Speer Law Enforcement .223 55 gr Gold Dot JSP (GDSP). Speer number 24446.

The jacket is not bonded, but molecularly-fused, allowing terminal performance comparable to the more costly bonded bullets. You get exceptional performance at a reasonable price. The process of joining the jacket and core one molecule at a time eliminates the potential for the leading cause of bullet failure-jacket/core separation. It also ensures impressive weight retention through barriers as tough as auto-glass.

It is an excellent all-around .223 cartridge combining accuracy with barrier penetration. It will function perfectly in AR15s chambered for 5.56mm as well as those that are chambered only for .223 Rem. Like the 62 grain cartridges, the 55 grain cartridge will perform well in barrels with a rifling twist rate of 1:7 and 1:9. Unlike the 62 grain cartridges, it will also perform well in barrels with a 1:12 twist. That is why this round is suitable for agencies that use with a wide variety of .223 rifles and carbines.

"The U.S. Army Wound Ballistic Research Laboratory conducted terminal performance testing using 5.56 mm 55 gr M193 FMJ ammunition fired in 20” barrels of 1/14, 1/12, 1/9, and 1/7 twist rates. No difference in terminal performance was noted between shots made with the different twists. Similar testing was conducted with 5.56 mm 62 gr M855 FMJ ammunition fired in 1/9 and 1/7 twist barrels. Again, no difference in terminal performance was noted." Dr. Gary Roberts

"Apparently the 55gr stuff is loaded hot compared to other weights of gold dot. This is because homeland security was a huge buyer of the 24446 loading, and spec'ed a velocity very near 5.56." Pistol-forum.com

"If running 1/12 twist barrels, stick with the BH 50 gr TSX, Fed 55 gr TBBC, Fed 55 gr TSX, Horn 55 gr GMX, or Speer 55 gr Gold Dot." Dr. Gary Roberts

For M16A1's with 1/12 twist barrels, stick with the Fed 55 gr TBBC (LE223T1), BH 50 gr TSX, Speer 55 gr Gold Dot, or Fed 55 gr TSX (T223S). Dr. Gary Roberts

"My Department mandates 55 grain ammo because we still have some military surplus M16-A1 rifles on the street plus several hundred Armalite, Bushmaster and RRA with 16" 1:9 twist barrels. Our Department issued Federal 55 grain bonded soft points and before that non bonded 55 grain JSP WW. We used 55 grain FMJ for training." AR15.com

"The 55gr GDSP (24446) has been duty ammo here for a couple of years now, with several gel shoots and bunches of deer slain. I like what I've seen and it does well in the guns, which are almost exclusively 1/7 twists." Pistol-forum.com
