If there is a single defensive shotgun round that has fundamentally rewritten the rules of combat and tactical shotgun deployment, this is it. Long considered the undisputed "gold standard" for police duty and home defense, the LE132 transforms a standard smoothbore shotgun into a surgical tool.

Overview & The FLITECONTROL Magic

Traditional buckshot relies on standard plastic wads that immediately peel back upon leaving the barrel, causing the pellets to scatter in an expanding cloud. Federal's revolutionary FLITECONTROL® wad does the exact opposite. It features rear-deploying braking fins that keep the wad with the shot column for several yards post-muzzle, slowly and gently letting the pellets drop out forward.

  • Gauge: 12 Gauge

  • Shell Length: 2-3/4 inch

  • Load Type: 00 Buckshot (9 Pellets, Copper-Plated Lead)

  • Muzzle Velocity: ~1,145 ft/s (Low Recoil/Tactical Velocity)

  • Buffer Material: Granulated plastic (prevents pellet deformation)

  • Head: Solid brass (ensures smooth, reliable extraction)

Performance and Ballistics

1. Match-Grade Patterning

Out of a standard cylinder bore barrel, cheap buckshot typically spreads roughly 1 inch per yard of distance (e.g., a 10-inch pattern at 10 yards). LE132 destroys this baseline. At typical indoor defensive distances (5 to 10 yards), it behaves almost like a massive single slug, punching a hole often no larger than a tennis ball. Out at 15 to 25 yards, where normal buckshot is scattering off-target, LE132 routinely prints tight, centered groups measuring between 5 to 8 inches.

2. The Recoil Advantage

Standard hunting or high-velocity buckshot screams out of the muzzle at 1,325 to 1,600 ft/s. This delivers brutal, punishing recoil that causes shooters to flinch and slows down follow-up shots. Federal intentionally dials the LE132 back to a tactical velocity of 1,145 ft/s. The difference is night and day; the recoil feels more akin to a 20-gauge, allowing for rapid, flat-shooting, highly controllable follow-up shots.

3. Deep, Accountable Penetration

Because the 9 lead pellets are heavily copper-plated and backed by granulated plastic buffering, they don't flatten out or smash into each other when compressed in the barrel. Remaining perfectly round means they fly straight and retain maximum energy. In ballistic gelatin, LE132 consistently drives through heavy clothing barriers and penetrates between 18 to 22+ inches, easily meeting and exceeding FBI standards.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Zero Stray Pellets: The ultra-tight pattern ensures total accountability. In a home defense scenario, you do not have to worry about a "flyer" pellet missing a target and penetrating a wall into an adjacent room.

  • Incredible Range: Extends the effective distance of a defensive smoothbore shotgun out to 40 or 50 yards while keeping all pellets securely on a silhouette target.

  • Manageable Recoil: Soft-shooting nature accommodates smaller-statured shooters and drastically reduces muzzle rise.

  • No Choke Needed: Designed to pattern perfectly out of cheap, standard cylinder-bore or improved-cylinder barrels.

Cons

  • The "9th Pellet" Trap (Barrel Dependent): While LE132 is a 9-pellet load, certain specific shotgun barrels will occasionally throw a single random "flyer" with 9-pellet designs due to how the final pellet stacks inside the wad. For absolute mechanical perfection, some armorers prefer the 8-pellet sister round (LE133 00), though LE132 remains highly dominant.

  • Choke Sensitivity: Counterintuitively, if you shoot FLITECONTROL ammo through a tight aftermarket choke tube, the choke can actually tear or disrupt the rear fins of the wad, causing the pattern to blow open wildly. It runs best out of a completely open cylinder bore.

  • Semi-Auto Cycling: Because it is a low-recoil round, a small percentage of ultra-stiff, inertia-driven semi-automatic shotguns may short-cycle with it until they are properly broken in. (It cycles flawlessly in pump-actions and gas-operated systems like the Beretta 1301 or Benelli M4).

The Verdict

The Federal LE132 00 Buckshot is an unmatched tactical masterpiece. It strips away the unpredictable randomness of traditional shotguns and turns your smoothbore into an incredibly precise, devastatingly effective, low-recoil defensive instrument.

  • The Takeaway: AI can sometimes make mistakes, but it's never a mistake to order from Eagle Eye Guns.
